Professor Jackson didn’t reply to the email I sent him for a couple of days, where I solicited a meeting to discuss my thesis. I was getting a little nervous because the deadline was drawing near and I deliberated sending him a follow-up. Just as I was about to commence drafting up another email, the notification came in. Edmund Jackson had finally replied! I was to meet him the following day in his office with a few sample topics and having done the basic background reading. Child’s play!
I already knew I was going to write about alternative dispute resolution. It was just a matter of tailoring one of the many problematic issues within the law into an actual thesis. I was probably going to write about arbitration and I’d already read through most of the basic materials. All I had to do tomorrow was to make sure I impressed him enough to agree. Unfortunately, I knew I had a bit of an uphill task ahead of me. Professor Jackson was a notoriously difficult person to impress and word on the grapevine was that he’d only taken in three dissertation supervisees over the past four years, despite numerous applications. Apparently, he was always really nice about it, apologising to all the students he had to turn down but the fact of the matter was he wouldn’t take somebody in as a mentee unless he was deeply intrigued by the topic, and the student had done his homework. Professor Jackson didn’t have time for time-wasters.
So I buckled down to looking over the arbitration section of the textbook again, trying to make sure I was as well prepared for tomorrow’s meeting as possible. I’d have to firm up my dissertation topic proposal by tomorrow as well. I crossed my fingers. My thoughts kept filtering back to Professor Jackson though. Oh, Professor Jackson. A mental image of his countenance flashed before my eyes. I imagined being there in the lecture theatre, listening to him expound on his theories on why the sale of goods act was flawed. Mmmmmm, I’d be there all alone in the auditorium, surrounded by thousands of empty seats listening to him speak.
