Yes, I know this is "complete fantasy." No, I am not criticizing due to explicit nature of content."Sensation and Magic" was disturbing in so many ways, and I have to wonder about the 5-star ratings (???!!!). Among the problems I had with it are the following:
- There is very little plot or story to connect the super explicit scenes which comprise the majority of the content.
- The pacing of the explicit scenes (complete lack of romance or literary foreplay), along with the lack of any basis for trust or a relationship, rendered the scenes nauseating rather than arousing. I had difficulty finishing the story. I suspect the reason for the high average rating is that many people who did not like it couldn't make themselves finish and therefore did not rate the book.
- The behavior that is presented positively as being liberated and enlightening is extremely dangerous due to the complete disregard of many basic safety issues--behavior that could easily result in significant injury to parties involved were the behavior to be imitated (hard to write this without spoilers).
Unless you are looking for very hard-core, in-your-face scenes with little else, you should probably skip this one. I wish I had.

As I was reading this, the thought constantly running through my mind was, "This is so much better than watching porn!" The story just drew me in. I found myself really caught up in the lives of these women who were best friends and who dared to explore and actually participate in acts you'd never imagine an older woman doing. I loved reading this because Ms. Gibson describes true to life circumstances and people, not depictions of media-influenced tall, skinny, and unrealistic women. I get so sick of watching erotic movies or soft porn that always shows flawlessness in physical appearance. It's not real, and it definitely frustrates me more than turns me on. But this story was over the top with sexual fantasy and I found myself not wanting the story to end. I wanted to read more and because of this I highly recommend Sensation and Magic.
Looking for a kinky book that's a little bit different? Then Sensation & Magic by Germaine Gibson is worth a look. First of all, this book is about and written for "mature" women, defined loosely as post menopausal women fifty-five or so and holding. Through somewhat vague means some housewives, long-time friends who often hang out at Ikea drinking coffee in their favorite decorated rooms, are persuaded to take introductory "courses" in BDSM. To their surprise, this experience reawakens their sexuality and, after an adjustment period, strengthens their friendship and leads to a profitable and exhilarating "hobby."
The narrative is told in the first person with a minimalist conversational tone. Oddly, this style manages to punctuate the sexual scenarios and make them more erotic in a less is more sort of way. A personal plus for me is the book's negligible use of back-stories - the story is primarily in the now. My only real criticism of Sensation & Magic is that it sorely needs to be proofread. Based on the considerable number of misspelled words and missing punctuation marks, it looks more like a rough draft than a finished manuscript.
While I am definitely not an expert on erotica, I do enjoy a good story in the genre from time to time. When I saw this book, I was especially intrigued with the women's journal part. I personally love stories told from a journal standpoint because they tend to include emotion and details that are deeper than a storyline. This book was absolutely fabulous. While it clearly has erotic language and descriptive sexual exploration, it is so much more than just a hot novel. The characters are very easy to relate to and the situations they find themselves in are believable in nearly every detail. I also loved the wording and how the author used beautiful literary prose in the midst of S&M behavior. Men might not appreciate it as much as a woman would, but for me it was the ultimate erotic read. It combines raw sexual acts of the body with the emotional sexuality that women experience. I am excited to have found this author and will be watching for new titles by Ms. Gibson.
This is erotica at its best, with a story told as if the reader was there, first hand experiencing the events.. Or at least, that is how it felt for me, when I read this "woman's erotic journey through Submission and Mastery."
If you want a erotic story written as dirty as it can be, then this is not your story, as the author has carefully crafted each of the 7 chapters with words that not only tell more than their initial meaning, but also leave behind a feeling desire that you have missed something you wanted to be part of.
Lively written, and in different forms, as some parts are dialogue, in where the main character is receiving commands to obey, and other parts are more in journal form (and as exciting as the other part).
What appealed to me about this story is that the story line is more than just sexual activities. The story line introduces you to the personalities of the main character, as well as their needs, wants, and desires in a very respectful and colourful way. And yet, there is enough enticing sexual action throughout the story to make your blood flow a bit faster, as your desires to be in the same room with the main character gets stronger and stronger.
Although targeting the female readers, many men will also really enjoy this story, as they can either fantasize of being in control, or come up with some new suggestions for their own bedroom adventures at home, or elsewhere.
This is a great story that will get your juices flowing, and at the same time let you enjoy a good read in where you learn about the sexual desires of a female who is not afraid to do as told. Highly recommended in the S&M genre, as well as for lovers of all erotica sub-genres.
